„Rothensand wurde 915 als Rotensant erstmals erwähnt, als Priester Niethard den Ort dem Kloster Fulda übergab. Der Name verweist auf den gelbroten Sandboden der Räto-Liasplatte. Kirchlich gehörte Rothensand bis 1455 zu Seußling und später zu Schnaid; heute liegt es im Erzbistum Bamberg.“[5]
