Hinirang na heneral matapos magapi at sumuko ang hukbo ng mga Kastila sa Bulacan, 23 Hunyo 1898. Nagpatuloy sa pagtatanggol ng Pilipinas sa pagsiklab ng Digmaang Pilipino–Amerikano, 4 Pebrero 1899. Kabilang sa mga Pilipinong nakipag-usap sa mga Amerikano sa Maynila ukol sa usaping pangkapayapaan na kalauna’y nabigo, 1899. Muling sumama kina Aguinaldo para ipagpatuloy ang pakikipaglaban ng Republika sa kabundukan ng Ilocos. Inatasan na ipagtanggol ang Tirad Pass upang masiguro ang kaligtasan ni Aguinaldo subalit nabaril ng isang asintado mula sa pangkat ng mga tumutugis na Amerikano. Nasawi, 2 Disyembre 1899.[12].
