Wolter was taking off from the Monterey airport in light plane when the craft suddenly went into a radical bank to the left. The left wing tip struck the ground, flipping the plane onto its back. He received a broken neck and head and chest injuries in the accident. A native of Carmel Valley, Wolter was owner of the Stirrup Club, a bar there. He was a charter member of the Carmel Flying club, and a member of Monterey Elks lodge 1285. He was a navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Mary J. Wolter; a son, Dean Ford Wolter, and a daughter, Carolyn Ford Wolter, all of Carmel Valley; and two brothers, James Wolter of Grass Valley, and David Wolter of Orange. Wolter was on his way to Salinas to pick up his wife for a trip to Sacramento when the accident occurred.[15].
