Peter Piot was born February 17, 1949, in Keerbergen.[1][2][3][4][5] He is a microbiologist, physician, politician, university teacher, and virologist. His fields include HIV/AIDS, Ebola hemorrhagic fever, medicine, and virology.[6]He has been affiliated with the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Imperial College London, and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS.[7] Positions held include director (1995–present), director (2010–present), president (1991–1994), and president (2007–present).[7]His spouse is Heidi Larson.[7] His awards include the Robert Koch Gold Medal, Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize, Vlerick Award, Officer of the National Order of the Leopard, Officer of the National Order of the Lion, and the Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, plus 2 more.[8][9][10].
