He pursued his education at the University of Bonn and worked in the fields of astronomy and cosmology[8].Throughout his career, he was employed by the Hamburg-Bergedorf Observatory, the University of Göttingen, and the European Southern Observatory. His professional contributions were recognized with several awards, including the Bruce Medal, the Prix Jules Janssen, and the James Craig Watson Medal, as well as a doctor honoris causa from the University of Aix-Marseille[9][10].
