She received numerous awards for her work, including the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame, Virginia Women in History, Langston Hughes Medal, American Book Awards, NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work, Fiction, Black Literary Hall of Fame, and two more [9][10][11][12][13].In her personal life, Nikki Giovanni was married to Virginia C. Fowler from 2016 until her death in 2024 [14]. She passed away on December 9, 2024, in Blacksburg [15], due to lung cancer [16].
