A United States citizen[13], he worked as a painter, poet, journalist, draftsperson, writer, and architectural draftsperson[14][10].He studied at the Art Students League of New York, the National Academy of Design, and the Cleveland Institute of Art[11]. Hartley specialized in painting and was associated with the Dada and Expressionism movements[4]. His output included portraits, still lifes, landscapes, figure paintings, and abstract art[15].Albert Pinkham Ryder influenced his work, and Hartley received a Guggenheim Fellowship[11].
