Karl Weinhold was born on October 26, 1823, in Dzierżoniów[1][2][3][4][5] and died on August 15, 1901, in Berlin[1][2][4][5]. A citizen of the Kingdom of Prussia[4][5] who practiced Lutheranism[4], he was the son of Karl Gotthelf Jacob Weinhold[4]. He pursued his education at the University of Wrocław and Frederick William University Berlin[4][5] and was a member of the Alte Breslauer Burschenschaft der Raczeks[6][4].He worked as a linguist, university teacher, writer, and germanist[4][5][7], specializing in the fields of Gothic Grammar and Silesian German[4]. His academic career began as a Privatdozent from 1847 to 1849[4][5] at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg[4]. He subsequently served as an extraordinary professor at the University of Wrocław from 1849 to 1850[4][4][5] before becoming an ordinary professor as of 1850[4][5]. He later held teaching positions at the University of Graz from 1851 to 1861 and at Kiel University from 1861 to 1876[4].Weinhold's academic contributions earned him several distinctions, including the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art and an honorary doctorate from the University of Göttingen[4]. He was recognized as an honorary member[4] and held memberships in the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences[6][4]. Additionally, he served as a member of the Prussian House of Lords[4][5].
