## Summary

James Hartle was born August 20, 1939, in Baltimore.[1][2] He was an astrophysicist.[1] His field was general relativity.[3] He was educated at Princeton University and the California Institute of Technology.[1][4]He was employed at the Institute for Advanced Study (1963–1964), Princeton University (1964–1966), the University of California, Santa Barbara (1966–2023), and the University of Chicago as of 1979.[2][1] He held the position of professor emeritus from 2005 to 2023.[2]His notable works include Wave function of the Universe, Gravity: An Introduction to Einstein's General Relativity, and The Quantum Universe: Essays on Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Cosmology, and Physics in General.[4] His awards include a Sloan Fellowship, Guggenheim Fellowship, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, honorary doctorate from the University of Waterloo, honorary member, Einstein Prize, and 1 more.[2][5][6][7][8] He was a member of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, and American Philosophical Society.[2][6][9][10][11] He died May 17, 2023, in Zurich.[4][12][13].
