He began his career as a wissenschaftlicher Assistent at the Mineralogical Museum (Berlin) in 1860 and continued in that role[6][5][6][5]. From 1863 to 1865 he served as a docent at the Gewerbeinstitut Berlin[6][5][6][5], and from 1866 to 1879 he was a professor at both the Royal College for Vocational Studies and the Bauakademie[6][5][6][5]. In 1879 he became a professor again, a position he held until 1898[6][5].He was a member of the Photographischer Verein zu Berlin, the Société française de Wothlytypie, the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and the Royal Photographic Society[6][10].
