She was educated at Straight University, Cornell University, and Dillard University [6].She was married three times: to Paul Laurence Dunbar from 1898 to 1906, to Henry Arthur Callis from 1910 to 1916, and to Robert John Nelson from 1916 until her death in 1935 [6]. She was associated with the Harlem Renaissance  and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Delaware Women [9].
